Shirley Jean Beck, 72, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, of Wadsworth, Ohio passed away Tuesday, August 15, 2017. Shirley was determined and strong and fought a courageous battle against brain cancer. She was born June 6, 1945 in Wadsworth to Grace Shanafelt and the late Herman Shanafelt. She was happily married to William for 54 years.
One of her greatest joys in life was being a devoted mother and grandmother. She was very proud of her family. She had a way of making everyone feel important and never missed an opportunity to attend school events including grandpals day, choir performances, field trips, sporting events and graduations. Shirley cherished Sunday lunches, vacations at the beach, holiday celebrations, gatherings with family and friends, and long car rides with her husband eating lunch wherever there was a good view.
Those who loved her were on the receiving end of gifts made from the heart. Shirley was a talented seamstress and spent countless hours making personal gifts from baptismal gowns to wedding dresses, from embroidered towels to purses and totes. These priceless items will be cherished by those she loved as they were stitched with love. Her family will forever be blanketed with her warmth from the intricate quilts she created for each member of her family.
Shirley had a special way of lighting up the room. Her smile spread to the sparkle in her eyes. Shirley was an amazing listener and made everyone feel worthy of her love. She will be missed by all that knew her and loved her.
She is survived by her loving husband, William; children, Michelle (Eric) Hevener, Sandra (Michael) Kurt, Stacey (Steven) Custer, and William (Heather) Beck; grandchildren, Sara, Anna, Joshua, Marlaina, Lexi, Lindsay, Zachary, Luke, Elliana, Taylor, Hunter, Logan, and Sierra; mother, Grace Shanafelt; brothers, Vivian (Ruth) Shanafelt and Dennis Shanafelt; sisters, Peggy Jelen and Laurel (Kim) Talbott; sisters-in-law, Janice (Cliff) Clifford and Nancy Belet, as well as many other family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her father, Herman; father-in-law, Clarence Beck; mother-in-law, Jeanette (Martin) Setko, and sister-in-law, Dorothy (Duane) Cathers.
Family will receive friends Sunday, August 20, 2017 from 2 until 4 P.M. at Grace Lutheran Church, 146 High Street, Wadsworth, Ohio 44281 with the service immediately following. Burial will be Monday, August 21, 2017 at 11 A.M. at Woodlawn Cemetery, 200 College Street, Wadsworth, Ohio 44281.
