Gerald H. Schmidt, 85, passed away July 25, 2012 at Altercare Rehabilitation and Nursing Center of Wadsworth after a lengthy illness. Mr. Schmidt was born on October 23, 1926 in Doylestown to the late August and Helen (nee Rufener) Schmidt. He resided in Wadsworth most of his life, was a veteran of the United States Army having served in the Philippines during World War II, drove a semi for over 30 years for Akron Sales Company until his retirement and was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Wadsworth, and the American Legion, Doylestown. In his spare time, he enjoyed working on cars and mowing his yard. Mr. Schmidt was preceded in death by his brother, Melvin and sister, Joyce Schmidt. Mr. Schmidt is survived by his wife, Helen (nee Winkler), whom he was married to for just over 62 years, also in Altercare; daughter Catherine (David) Byers, of Lodi: daughter, Joan (David) Lampa, of Mansfield; grandson, Gerald (Karen) Byers, of Wadsworth; great-grandson, Isaac, and great-granddaughter, Elizabeth and sister, Elinor Schmidt of Escondido, CA. The family will receive friends 4-7 P.M. Wednesday, August 1, 2012 at the Hilliard-Rospert Funeral Home, 174 N. Lyman St., Wadsworth, OH 44281. Graveside service will take place 1 P.M. Thursday at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be sent to Medina County SPCA, 245 S.
