Obituary
David R. Lewis, Jr., 85, formerly of Canfield, Ohio, more recently of Canton, passed away Wednesday, August 23, 2017. He was born May 14, 1932 in New Castle, Pennsylvania to the late David R. Sr. and Viola (Wasson) Lewis. The University of Florida and Youngstown State University is where he pursued studies in business and assignments with firms in Pittsburgh and Cleveland where he was indoctrinated in sales. Mr. Lewis was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in the Korean War.
Dave retired as the Vice President of Sales of Syro Steel Co. where he concentrated on his expertise in the development and acquisition of new highway safety products. He served on the Transportation Safety Industry Division, the Specification Review Committee and the Highway Advisory Council of the American Road and Transportation Association. As chairman of ATSSA’s Legislative Committee, he was a leading figure in establishing channels to state highway officials for locally based industry in their understanding of the workings and funding procedures for federally mandated or approved projects.
He was preceded in death by his beautiful wife Janice A. (Simpson) Lewis whom he married on January 18, 1958. David is survived by his three children Laurie M. (Donald) DeVille of Canton, Carla A. Lewis of Canfield, and David R. Lewis III (Therese) of Nashville, Tennessee; his seven grandchildren Carrie Deville-Passerine, Stephen Svetlak, Jr., Steven Stanislaw, Jr., Mark Stanislaw, Nicholas DeVille, Melissa DeVille, and Casey Stanislaw; and three great-grandchildren Mario Passerine, Maddalena Passerine, and Madison Hart.
Dave and his wife were prominent in a variety of civic activities and cultural affairs in the Youngstown area. He was an avid golfer, lover of books, history enthusiast, and world traveler. His heavy traveling never deprived him from a wide range of outdoor sports, restoring antique London cabs and wooden boats.
Graveside services will be conducted 1:00 pm, Tuesday, August 29, 2017 at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, 10175 Rawiga Rd., Seville, Ohio. Please meet at the information center at 12:45 pm.
