Rachel A. Diem died peacefully in her sleep just four days after her 95th birthday, at the Woodland Pond Skilled Nursing facility in New Paltz, New York. Rachel was a long-time resident of Wadsworth, Ohio, having moved there in 1951; she moved to New York in 2017 to be nearer to her daughter, Ruth Diem, and her son-in-law, Jeffrey Slade, who survive her.
Rachel grew up in the Lakewood section of Cleveland and attended Ohio Wesleyan University along with her twin sister, also named Ruth, who survives her. At OWU, she met Hugh E. Diem, and they were married almost 60 years, until Hugh’s death in 2007. In Wadsworth, Rachel was a long-time member of Wadsworth United Methodist Church, where she and Hugh sang in the choir. She was also a member of Literature and Arts and PEO, as well as Meals on Wheels.
Rachel is also survived by her granddaughter, Dr. Katie Slade, of Pennsylvania. A memorial service will be held next year, when conditions permit. Gifts in memory of Rachel may be given to Wadsworth United Methodist Church or Ohio Wesleyan University.
