Patricia Ann Gorey.
On September 13, 2022 our world lost a woman “extrordinaire “when Patricia Ann Gorey 96 yrs. died surrounded by her family. Mrs. Gorey, Pat, Mom, or Mom-mom, as she was called, spent her life following the advice of a favorite teacher who challenged students to “ Look in the mirror every night and ask yourself what have I done today to make the world a better place?” Pat dedicated her life to inspiring others to do the same by her example.
She was the oldest child born to Thomas and Nelle Whalen, farmers in Charleston, Illinois. who valued faith, family and hard work She met and married John “Pat” Gorey a “cityboy” who shared those same values in August of 1949. They moved to Akron, Ohio in 1951 and raised 5 children Kathy, Connie, Mike, Pat, and Cindy.
“Education is the one thing you can give your children that no one can take away” was something Pat believed and dedicated her life to with a high sense of purpose. She taught school substituting at St. Sebastian’s, taking Instruction to the Homebound and in her classroom at Firestone Park Elementary for 25 years. She was recognized as a Martha Holden Jennings Award “Outstanding Teacher of the Year” and never stopped advocating for children as a Girl Scout leader, Christ Child Society member and numerous volunteer activities.
Pat was an avid and accomplished seamtress, making entire wedding party gowns, curtains, slipcovers, quilts and handmade dolls. She was a member of the St. Thomas Women’s Auxiliary where she was a force in resurrecting the industrial sewing machines and the “project room.” The hospital gift shop and Christ Child Boutique were filled with her creative items lovingly made for fund raising. Pat was always ready to volunteer her service and loved being asked to use her sewing skills for her church family. Nothing was too small, (mending clothing) or too large (recovering the seat cushions for the pews)
Pat considered her greatest contribution to the world her family. “Family is everything” and Pat welcomed many people into her circle. She and John modeled a strong loving commitment to God and each other, attending daily Mass together. They were often seen walking into church holding hands and saying the rosary.
Celebrating 73 years of marriage, Pat said, “Aren’t we lucky? God has been so good to us.” Her most precious treasures were her 16 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
Pat leaves behind to continue her loving legacy her husband John Patrick Gorey, daughters Kathy Kuzma (Ron)Houston, Connie Cevasco(Dan)Cincinnati, Cindy Sunday (Art)Wadsworth.
