Obituary
Gary E. Greive, 84, passed away Wednesday, October 17, 2018.
He was preceded in death by his parents Dorothy & Edward Greive. He is survived by his brother and sister- in-law Edward and Carol, nieces Christina (Dave) Fisher of Merritt Island, FL, Corrina (Tom) Malek of Worthington, OH and grandniece Claire Schultz. In addition he is survived by other relatives and friends and will be greatly missed.
Gary was a huge baseball fan and a lifelong Indians Fan. He spent over 30 years coaching and managing Senior League, Adult Men’s as well as Hot Stove Baseball where he won four State Championships.
A life of owning and operating movie theatres was inspired by a trip to Radio City Music Hall with his grandmother. He started work in the Cleveland area for Associated Theaters at the age of 15, working as an usher and by age 18 was managing many of the theatres including, The Fairview, Loews East, Hilliard Square Homestead and Variety. He purchased his first theater, The Strand in downtown Wadsworth in 1960, remodeling and reopening it in 1962. He purchased the Lyn Theatre, Akron in 1971, opened Great Oaks Cinema, Wadsworth in 1977 and he purchased the Blue Sky Drive-In, Wadsworth and Magic City Drive-In, Barberton in 1980. He also operated the West Theatre and Lake 8 Movies in Barberton.
The family will receive friends 4-8pmon Monday, October 22, 2018 at the Hilliard-Rospert FuneralHome, 174 N. Lyman St., Wadsworth, OH. Services will be held Tuesday October 23, 2018 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 5451 S. Cleveland Massillon Rd., Norton, OH with visitation one hour prior from 10-11am. Entombment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, 6265 Columbia Rd., North Olmsted, OH
Memorial donations may be made in Gary’s name to St. Matthew or the charity of the donor’s choice.
