Richard Eugene (Dick or Gene) Hickernell went home to the Lord on Sunday June 2, 2024. He was born June 5, 1943, to Roger and Marcella Hickernell in Dayton, Ohio at a time when his parents owned a small farm north of Eaton, OH. His father’s employment took the family to Hillsdale, MI, Clarkdale, MS and eventually to Akron and the Wadsworth, Ohio home. Graduating in 1961 from Wadsworth High School, Dick went on to Akron U, where he got his BSIM in 1965. He had fallen in love with his high school sweetheart, Mary Beth Waltz and they married in 1965. He worked at Babcock and Wilcox in the Nuclear Equipment Division for 26 years and then became the Director of Materials Management at Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital for the 15 years, retiring in 2009. He loved his work at the Hospital, fulfilling people’s needs at the highest quality at the lowest costs.

During this time, he and his wife of 59 years, Mary Beth raised twin daughters Robin (Dan) Turner and Rachel (Doug) Weekley and son Stephen (Nikki). Dick and Beth have 17 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild and 2 more on the way. They lived as an extended family in Wadsworth Township among the Waltzes and Kellys. He was a member of the Reimer Road Church and was most interested in the Sunday School Bus Ministry and the Christian School sponsored by the Church at this location.

Dick was preceded in death by his younger sisters Linda and Louise his older sister Patti and both of his parents. In addition to his wife, children, and grandchildren, Dick is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

A service will be conducted 1:00PM Thursday in the Committal Shelter of Woodlawn Cemetery, Wadsworth, OH with Pastor Jim Newton officiating.
