Thomas A. Hirschinger

Wadsworth – Thomas A. Hirschinger passed away on August 21, 2021 at the age of 88. He was born on May 16, 1933 in Beech Grove, Ind. To the late Joseph M. and Naomi (Durkin) Hirschinger.

Tom grew up in Quincy, Ill. Where he graduated from Notre Dame High School. (He never missed a class reunion.) He then graduated from Quincy College with a B.S. degree in Chemistry in 1955.

After moving to Pittsburgh, Pa., he was employed by ALCOA from 1955 to 1961 and by PPG Industries from 1961 to 1989 in their Research Laboratories at Barberton, Oh., and from 1989 to 1995 at Monroeville, Pa.

Tom was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Wadsworth and served as an ancient acolyte at funeral masses. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Father Carl Anthony Council 3213 in Wadsworth and was also a 50-year member of the American Chemical Society. Among his other affiliations he was actively involved with the Boy Scout movement at Sacred Heart Church as well as the Friends of Scouting drive.

He has been a trustee of the Calmoutier Memorial Association which purchased the Church of St. Genevieve in 1986 and maintains it as a historic site in Calmoutier, Oh. Tom also served as an officer of the Wadsworth Historical Society.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Tim. Tom is survived by his wife, Lucille (Walter) Hirschinger. They were married at St. Mary’s Church in Wooster and were blessed with 58 wonderful years together. Also surviving are his brother, Ted (Alice) Hirshinger of Fulton, Mo.; and his sister, Theresa (Al) of Glenview, Ill.; along with 18 nieces and nephews.

A private graveside service was held a St. Mary’s Cemetery in Wooster with Father Stephen Moran officiating. Memorial donations may be made to the Calmoutier Memorial Association c/o Beth Opatrny, 446 Kinney Circle, Wooster, OH 44691.
