Obituary

Katherine
V.
Hughes
Rittman

Katherine V. Hughes, 94 of Wadsworth passed away peacefully November 26, 2018, surrounded by her family. She was born March 17, 1924 in Rittman, Ohio to the late John C. and Ella I. (Ferguson) Kehoe. In 1938 she and twelve friends from St. Martha’s Catholic School on Akron’s North Hill formed “St. Philomena’s Study Club”. They have met monthly until declining health in recent years started slowing them down. Their meetings began with prayer and included bible study as well as many social activities. They celebrated each other’s weddings and as their families grew they shared each other’s joys, sorrows, successes and hardships. In addition to their regular meetings they began having family outings and picnics. They collectively had seventy-two children and well over one hundred grandchildren and the number of great grandchildren makes for a lively discussion. They vacationed together and went on religious pilgrimages together. Upon her passing, only three of the life-long friends remain, Irene Chalfant, Mary Louise Brannon, and Mary Ann Cook. After her retirement from Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital she volunteered at the hospital as a “Gray Lady”, in the Wadsworth School System helping young children learn to read, as a Poll Worker for the Board of Elections, as a Driver for those needing a ride for doctor appointments, the Sharon Women’s Club, and was always very active at Sacred Heart Parish as member of the Altar and Rosary Society and preparing and serving funeral dinners. She enjoyed baking and was an expert cake decorator making beautiful wedding cakes for all of her children and many others. She was preceded in death by her loving husband Milton and her sisters Mildred Wilfong, Betty Trego, and Roberta Queer. She is survived by her children; Pat (Carrie) of Mt Juliet, TN, Doug (Kathy) of Doylestown, OH, Brad (Vicki) of Johnstown, OH, Mary Beth (George Downey) of Medina-Barberton, OH, and Dave (Kathy) of Wadsworth, OH, 12 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great granddaughter, several cousins and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. The family will receive friends from 4-7pm on Sunday, December 2, 2018 at the Hilliard Rospert Funeral Home, 174 Lyman St. Wadsworth, Ohio. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 Monday morning at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 272 Broad St. Wadsworth, Ohio with Interment to follow at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, Seville, Ohio. The family would like to thank the staff of Life Care Hospice in Wooster.
