Obituary
Hubert T. Latham passed away at Wadsworth Rittman Hospital on Saturday, August 22, 2009 with family nearby.
Hubert was born in Marshall County, Indiana on April 30, 1913 to Edward A. and Hazel Latham. He lived most of his early years near Tippecanoe, Indiana with his grandmother, Hannah Van Gundy and Uncle Elmer Van Gundy.
He met his future bride as an elementary student white both attended
Tippecanoe Elementary and High School. They married on April 28, 1935 and celebrated their seventy-fourth wedding anniversary this past April. Hubert is survived by the love of his life, June (Shaffer) Latham, and loving daughter and son-in-law Janice (Latham) and Robert Eley of Wadsworth, Ohio; and beloved granddaughter and her husband, Gwynne (Eley) and William Roberts of Wadsworth, Ohio; and his great-granddaughter, Paige, who made his eyes twinkle; and many nieces and nephews.
Upon graduation from Manchester College in North Manchester, Hubert was an elementary educator for over 30 years in Tippecanoe, Indiana; Akron, Indiana; Rochester, Indiana and South Bend, Indiana. He gave his heart to the children he taught and made the classroom a magical place filled with a waterfall or two, planets orbiting the ceiling, goldfish tanks, student artwork everywhere, and maybe a rabbit in the corner.
He also loved to write children’s plays that emphasized math and science concepts. Early in his teaching career he took students on hikes and sat around campfires talking about poetry, science, and nature. Hubert loved baseball games and always cheered for the Cubs. He was a true baseball fan who loved to play the game
as much as watch it. He prided his work in the Masons and Shriners and was a 32 degree Mason. Hubert and June traveled after retirement going to Hawaii, Russia, and the European countries.
Throughout their seventy-four years of married life, they were always considered a respected couple. Hubert was an intelligent and strong person who face life straight-on with a “can do” attitude and an unwavering faith in God. He prided himself on being responsible and a man of his word. His family will miss his smile, wonderful blue eyes, and his undying devotion to his beloved wife. Their life together
was truly a love story.
The family extends its gratitude to the emergency room, surgery department, special care unit, and the third floor nurses and doctors of Wadsworth Rittman Hospital who worked so valiantly to help Hubert Latham during the final hours of his life.
The family will recieve friends 9-11 AM Thursday, August 27, at the
Hilliard-Rospert Funeral Home, 174 N. Lyman St, Wadsworth, where funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM Thursday with Reverend James L. Singleton officiating. Interment at 1:00 PM Friday, August 28, at Tippecanoe Cemetery
