Obituary
June peacefully made her journey home on February 23, 2011 surrounded by her loving family. She was the daughter of Noble and Ruth Shaffer of Tippecanoe, IN and was born on June 10, 1916. She married her childhood sweetheart, Hubert Latham on April 28, 1935. They were married for 74 years before Hubert passed away on August 22, 2009.
Including her parents, June was preceded in death by her sister, Beverly Gorbitz, and brothers; Jack Shaffer, Max Shaffer, Bill Shaffer, Glenn Shaffer, and Don Shaffer. Her sister, Pauline Witmer lives in South Bend, IN. June is also survived by her loving daughter and son-in-law Janice (Latham) and Robert Eley of Wadsworth, Ohio; and beloved granddaughter and her husband, Gwynne (Eley) and William Roberts of Wadsworth, Ohio; and her great-granddaughter, Paige.
She was a tireless worker especially during the depression and World War II. Throughout the war she worked on the assembly line at Ball Band in South Bend, IN making shoes and boots for the soldiers. Following the war, she was a compassionate and loving mother and wife always doing whatever was needed for her family. In later years, her stories were rich with family history and life’s experiences. June started college with her daughter in 1962 and completed her masters in education magnum cum laude. She taught elementary grades at Hay School in the South Bend Community School Corporation. June and Hubert traveled to Russia, Hawaii, most of the European Countries and at least “touched a foot” in all fifty states. She loved genealogy work, antiques, and beautiful gardens. June was president of the School Men’s Wives Club, an officer in the local chapter of AAUP and DAR. She lived a full and respected life.
Services will be held Tuesday, March 1, at Walnut Church of the Brethren in Argos, IN (intersection of Gumwood and 19). Viewing is at 11:00 with the service beginning at 11:30. Internment will be at the Tippecanoe Cemetery next to her beloved husband in Tippecanoe, IN.
The family is extremely grateful to Hospice of Medina County for their unparalleled care, support and kindness. Extraordinary caregivers helped June through every step of her journey and provided resources for the family that eased a few burdens. The First Christian Church in Wadsworth, OH held the family together in spiritual and loving support that is truly appreciated.
