Bessie Mae Martin, 93, died February 16, 2014, at Hospice of Medina County. She was born April 17, 1920, in Murray City, OH, daughter of Richard J. and Sylvia E. Pinnick. The family moved to Barberton in 1926 where she graduated from Barberton High School in 1938. Bessie was married 49 years to Anthony (Tony) Martin until his death in 1989.
She worked her entire career as a secretary at various companies in Barberton including Coventry Ware, Kamen Soap, Sun Rubber, and Wright Tool & Forge. She was a long time member of the Barberton Church of the Nazarene, where she was the organist for 25 years. She enjoyed playing her piano up until two months before her death. Past musical talent included not only the organ and piano, but also the accordion and guitar.
Bessie and Tony lived in Norton over 30 years and moved to DeBary, FL, in the 1970’s to enjoy their retirement in the Florida sunshine. Her volunteer work in Florida included Meals on Wheels, The DeBary Chamber of Commerce, and work at the Public Library. She returned to Wadsworth in 2003 and was a resident of Liberty I for over ten years. Many thanks to the staff of Liberty I for the wonderful home, surroundings, friends and activities that Bessie enjoyed while living there. Thanks also to the Hospice of Medina County for the tender, loving care she received both at the Center and at Liberty I.
She was preceded in death by her parents and sister Ruth Coon of Norton. Survived by friends Irene Adams, Suzanne Berlin (her goddaughter) and Asa Berlin of Wadsworth, and Pamela, Tim, Drew and Evan Wilson of Wheeling, WV. Also survived by nephew Ronald Coon and several other nieces and nephews.
