Wanda (Smith) Matheney (Age 82) was born October 22, 1929 in Charleston, West Virginia to Glenn and Bessie (Blackshire) Smith. Wanda passed away 3/14/2012 at the Volusia County Florida Hospice Care Facility in Edgewater, Florida from ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease). She was preceded in death by her first husband Ray Matheney, her mother and father and her brothers, Walter Smith, Wilbur Smith, Frank Smith and Don Smith and her great grandson Colton Hedge. She is survived by her second husband, George Haines, sisters Wilda Parsons, Verlie Payne, Rose Brooks, two brothers Glen and Ed Smith, her sons and spouses, Keith (Sandie)Matheney, Jim (Sara)Matheney, Irvin Roy (Sandy) Matheney and Blane (Sandy)Matheney, her grandchildren and spouses, Tracie Matheney, Lisa (Matt) Emerson, Lori (Todd) Hedge, Tina (Derek) Hansen, Jason (Mandy) Matheney, Jay Matheney, Joe Matheney, Jeff Matheney, Ann (Charles) Burand, Richard (Luisa) Matheney and David Matheney, and 15 great grandchildren.

Wanda met her first husband Ray when he was in the Army. They married in West Virginia and moved to Ohio in 1952. Wadsworth ultimately became the place they called home and where they raised their four sons. Ray passed away at age 58 and Wanda continued to live in Wadsworth until 1998 when she moved to Edgewater, Florida where she remained until she passed away. She met and married her second husband George Haines in Edgewater.

Wanda was a very family oriented person who loved her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren very much and she spent as much time as possible with them over the years even though they were spread around the country. Wanda collected and enjoyed her many antiques. She loved to cook and bake and one of her legacies is that she left her many, many cookbooks to her grandchildren and great grandchildren many of whom also shared her great love for cooking and baking. Wanda was also a gifted gardener and known for her love of flowers, and her home was always surrounded by beautiful flowers that she dearly loved.

Calling hours will be Friday March 23rd from 6-8 PM and the Funeral Service will be held Saturday, March 24th at 11:00 AM at Hilliard-Rospert Funeral Home in Wadsworth, Ohio. Burial will be at Woodlawn Cemetery immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers donations in memory of Wanda Matheney may be made to the ALS Association, Development Department, Suite 250, Calabasas Hills, CA 91301 or Hospice of Volusia/Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Tr. Port Orange FL 32129.
