George O. Mayer Jr, 85, formerly of Wadsworth more recently of New Albany OH passed away Wednesday July 17, 2013. He was born September 21, 1927 in Akron OH to the late Rev George O. Sr. and Kathryn M. Mayer. Mr. Mayer was a U.S. Army Veteran, and was retired from Wadsworth City Schools where he served as principal at Valley View & Isham Schools, Administrative Assistant Superintendent, and Treasurer. He also taught at Norton HS and Univ. of Akron. He was member of Wadsworth Lodge #385 F&AM (Past Worshipful Master), Grand Council of R&SM, Cuyahoga Falls Council #144 (Past Illustrious Master), Knights Templar, Cuyahoga Falls Commandery #83 (Past Eminent Commander), Royal Arch Masons, Medina County Chapter #243, (Past High Priest), Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Akron, KYCH, Ohio Priory #18. He was a past member of the Wadsworth Rotary Club and Wadsworth Cribbage Club, and an avid golfer. He was also a big supporter of Wadsworth HS athletics.
Mr. Mayer was preceded in death by his wife Mary “Polly” (Davis), two sisters Mary Housiaux and Hermina Hoyt and one brother Richard Mayer. George is survived by his children and their spouses: Georgia (Bruce) Thomas of Wadsworth, Marj Warren of Australia, Joe (Chrystal) Mayer of New Albany, OH and Nan (Hollie) Mayer of Willoughby, OH. There are 6 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also surviving.
The family will receive friends 1-3 PM Saturday at the Hilliard-Rospert Funeral Home, 174 N. Lyman St. Wadsworth where Masonic Services will begin at 3:00PM followed by a funeral service. Interment will be in Old Union Cemetery, Niles OH. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Wadsworth Rotary Scholarship Fund, PO Box 45 Wadsworth OH 44282.
