Cora “Juanita” Newman
On Saturday, June 19, 2021, Cora “Juanita” Newman passed away at the age of 93 at the Medical University of SC in Charleston, South Carolina. Born April 8, 1928. Juanita was one of ten children born to E.L. “Casey” and Idoma Hardin in Adair County, Kentucky. Raised in the “Hills” of Kentucky, Juanita “Needy”, along with her nine siblings were brought up working in the country store their parents owned. The Hardin children weren’t raised with a lot but had a lot. Throughout their lives, as brothers and sisters, they looked out and took care of each other. The Hardin children worked sun up to sun down in their youth and were raised with the values and love the Bible taught. We continue to carry pride of our name, the values and love of Christ instilled in each of us. Juanita took great pride of where she came from.
At the age of 14 Juanita left home to live with her older sister, Annie Mills, in Ohio. Her sister Annie would help guide her into adulthood and provide a surrogate mother figure to Juanita. The sisters would eventually marry best friends, Jack Mills and Arlie Newman. The Navy would bring Juanita’s family to settle in South Carolina, but she always carried her “Old Kentucky Home” with her in her heart.
Juanita, as all the Hardin children, carried the values learned as a child into her own family. Juanita was a devoted wife and loving mother. She would write to her mother every week up until her mother passed away. Ironically, years later she would provide the same motherly love to her sister, Annie’s son, Timothy Mills, as he bravely fought cancer in SC.
Juanita’s sister Fran, was always a constant in her life through-out hardships, illness, and joyous occasions. All her siblings were. Juanita’s life was full of loving friends and family. Juanita happily returned the same love and support through-out her life.
The last 6 years of her life would take her through the dark journey of Alzheimer’s disease. She spoke daily of the country store and siblings during their youth. The one thing Alzheimer’s was never able to take was her “Old Kentucky Home”.
Juanita is survived by her Son, Robert Newman and Daughter Susan Feagin both of Moncks Corner, SC. Grandchildren, Dawn, Angela and Megan. Great Grand Children, Ava, Maddie, Katie and A.J. all of South Carolina. Siblings Annie Mills (OH), Francis Hutchens (KY), Carl Ray Hardin (KY), Wanda Combest (KY) and Patsy Johnson (KY).
