Dorothy June Newcomer Rufener passed away, peacefully, after a short battle with cancer, on Sunday, February 17, 2013.
The daughter of Lulu (Cox) and Ernest Newcomer, she was born at home in Guilford Township, Medina County in June 1937. After graduating from Seville High School in 1955, she worked for various companies in the data processing field, retiring in 1996 as Manager of Data Processing from the Summit County Child Support Enforcement Division. In her spare time, she volunteered with the Masonic Lodge as a Rainbow girl advisor and as a 4-H advisor. She also enjoyed gardening, cooking, canning and freezing the bounty of her large garden. A volleyball enthusiast, she and her husband Keith co-coached the Rittman High School Volleyball team for 6 years, and co-coorindated the Tri-County Senior Olympics Volleyball Tournament for the last 10 years. Dorothy enjoyed traveling to volleyball tournaments, going on cruises, and an annual winter trip to St. Martin. She was a devoted, loving, faithful, wife, mother, grandmother and friend.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Wayne Newcomer, and sister Wanda Riggenbach. Surviving are her husband of 54 years, G. Keith Rufener; her son Dr. George Keith Rufener (Marcia) of Indianapolis, IN; daughter Cindy Bennett (J. Andrew) of Fairfax, VA; daughter Rebecca Benya (Mark) of Wadsworth; grandchildren Matthew Rufener; J. Grant and Erin Bennett; and Heather, Katherine, and Ariel Benya; plus many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
The family will receive friends Thursday February 21, 2013 from 5-8 pm at the Hilliard-Rospert Funeral Home 174 N. Lyman Street, Wadsworth where funeral services will be conducted Friday at 10:30am with Pastor Keith D. Hejnal officiating. Interment will be at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens.
