Obituary
John E. Scherba, 82, of Wadsworth, passed away Thursday, February 24, 2011.
He was born to the late John and Anna (Balan) Scherba in Gary, Indiana in 1928. John moved to Wadsworth in 1955 with his wife Beverly. He held a B.S. from the Illinois Institute of Technology and a M.S. in Industrial Management from the University of Illinois. He served in the Army Artillery as a Sergeant First class in combat in the Korean War.
He joined the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Co. in Barberton in 1955, rising to the position of Director of Personnel. He later joined the First National Bank of Akron, retiring in Jan. 1994 as Senior Vice President of Human Resources of the FirstMerit Corporation.
John served as a Lecturer at the University of Akron Evening College for 15 years. He was a Past President of the Downtown Akron Kiwanis Club, American Society for Human Resources, and America Society for Training and Development.
Throughout his career he was active in service to the community including: University of Akron Advisory Committee, Junior Achievement, Chairman United Negro College Fund Drive, and Akron Urban League. He was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ of Wadsworth for 54 years where he served as Deacon, Chairman of the Organ Fund Drive and on the Personnel Committee.
He was preceded in death by his son Mark P. Scherba.
John is survived by his loving wife Beverly of 55 years, daughter Susan of Wadsworth, son Gregory of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, and brother Dr. Eugene (Carol) Scherba of Chicago.
The family will receive friends 5 to 8 PM Thursday, March 3, at the Hilliard-Rospert Funeral Home, 174 N. Lyman St, Wadsworth. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Friday, March 4, at Trinity United Church of Christ, 215 High St., Wadsworth, with Reverend Daniel Doty officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association or the Memorial Fund at the Wadsworth Trinity United Church of Christ.
