Obituary
Jean Ann (Bishop) Shank, 96, of Wadsworth, Ohio, passed away peacefully on September 28, 2023, at Liberty Residence II of Wadsworth.
Jean was born August 20, 1927, at home in Arlington, Ohio, to the late Lawrence and Cora (Parker) Bishop. She was the seventh of eight children and was raised on the Bishop family farm in Arlington. She married Byron Shank on November 22, 1950, and together raised two daughters, Judy (Jeff) Lang of Wadsworth and Cathy (Doug) Sikora of Ceresco, Mich.
She was an active member of Wadsworth United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women organization and served as a beginning sewing 4-H group leader in Wadsworth. She worked as a legal secretary in Findlay, Ohio, and later retired as a secretary from Citizens Bank and Trust in Wadsworth.
Jean was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, baking, keeping notes of daily life, and attending sporting events and activities of her grandchildren. She and Byron traveled often, especially enjoying trips to Florida, Hawaii, and Europe with good friends.
Jean helped create lasting memories of summers at their cabin in Michigan and family Christmases at their home, and has passed along her mother’s recipe for butterscotch cookies, which she always had ready whenever the grandchildren visited. She prepared many meals in the church kitchen for community groups and is remembered fondly for making sure house guests felt welcome and well fed.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Byron, on June 25, 2006; sisters, Zoe (Bishop) McGrath, Ruth (Bishop) Eier, and Ellen (Bishop) Nonnamaker; brothers, Morris, Maynard, Carl, and John Bishop; and great-grandson, Edziu Byron Kieltyka.
In addition to her daughters, she is survived by grandchildren, Erin (Sean) Fowler, Hallie (Jared) Barcalow, Brett (Marcela) Sikora, Stefanie (Bill) Adams, Abby (Aaron) Kieltyka, and Andrew Lang; 14 great-grandchildren, Cora, Maryn, Jolene, and Ethan Barcalow, Natalie, Cecilia, Bridget, and Lauren Adams, Ewan and Murray Fowler, Kai and Malu Sikora, and Bartosz and Zosia Kieltyka; numerous nieces and nephews, and dear friends at home and abroad.
Special thanks to the nurses, staff and friends at Liberty Residence II, who cared for Jean and helped keep her company for more than 17 years, and to her caregivers from Crossroads Hospice.
