Wadsworth

Helen E. Smith, age ninety of Wadsworth Ohio, passed away on Friday, April 30, 2021, due to complications from hip surgery. She is survived by her husband Robert (Bob) of sixty nine years of marriage.
Helen was born on August 30, 1930, in Syracuse, New York, to Philip Wahl and Emma (nee Gottstein), a family of German heritage and strong Catholic faith. She was their only child.
After high school, Helen worked in a civil service position for the U.S. Navy Dept, in Washington D.C. She was then introduced to Bob Smith, a young corporal in the Marine Corps. They were married on January 19, 1952, in snowy Syracuse. Shortly thereafter, Bob was deployed to the Korean war. Being a military family, her and Bob moved quite often, living in Portsmouth VA, Syracuse NY, Trenton NJ, Mobile AL, Anchorage Alaska (enduring the great earthquake in 1964), and St. Louis MO. Throughout it all, the change of locations was always exciting and sometimes challenging when she had the kids to herself during Bob’s . Wadsworth was their last move after Bob’s military retirement, where they have resided for the past fifty two years.
God blessed Helen and Bob with five children; Mark (Marty) Smith, Sue Martin, David (Becky) Smith, Kathy (Pete) Montion, and preceded in death by their son Gary Smith (Morissa). Additionally, they had fifteen grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren.
Helen was a faithful, devout Catholic who lived her faith to the fullest, setting an exemplary example to her family and friends. She volunteered with the Legion of Mary, Meals on wheels, Altar and Rosary Society, and Eucharistic ministry to the homebound. For twenty years she helped to save the unborn as a counselor and volunteer for the Barberton Community Pregnancy Center.
Helen loved being active. Her and Bob traveled extensively seeing every state in the nation, as well as international travel. They especially enjoyed the villages of Strittmatt and Engelschwand Germany, the area where her mother emigrated from.
She enjoyed going to square dances as a young adult. Bob and her square danced for many years. She loved doing craft work, including ceramics and toll painting.
She will be greatly missed by her large family and friends who cherished her.
