Tom E. Gaertner, 92, of Wadsworth passed away Friday, July 4, 2014. He was born January 23, 1922 in Cleveland to the late Milton E. and Lorene Gaertner. Mr. Gaertner was a graduate of Sharon High School and was a member of the U.S. Army Air Corp having flown 50 missions out of Algeria with the 99th Bomb Group and received the Air Medal with 10 clusters. After the war he went to work for the Ohio Injector and later acquired a Standard Oil franchise located at High Street and Rt. 261. Tom was a long time member and member of the board of directors for the Wadsworth Salvation Army and has been named a Life Member of the Salvation Army Advisory Board, a Charter Member of RAWIGA Country Club where he enjoyed playing his beloved game of golf, a member of Wadsworth Lodge #385 F&AM and American Legion Post 170, a member of the Lions Club and attended Trinity United Church of Christ.
Tom was preceded in death by his first wife Dorothy (Swartz), second wife Betty (Robertson – Wynkoop) and step-son Terry Wynkoop.
He is survived by his sister Nancy Phillips of Florida, step-son and daughter-in-law Rick & DR Wynkoop of Georgia and step-daughter and son-in-law Beth & Roger Blake of Wadsworth. There are grandchildren and great grandchildren also surviving.
A memorial service will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday July 15 at the Wadsworth Salvation Army, 527 College St., Wadsworth with Majors Tom & Debbie Grace and Rev. Daniel Doty officiating. Inurnment with military honors will be in Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery. Offerings to the Salvation Army of Wadsworth or Trinity United Church of Christ.
