James R. Townsend of Wadsworth passed unexpectedly into the presence of his savior, Jesus Christ, Monday June 30, 2014. He was born July 14, 1934 in Akron, Ohio, to the late James and Ethelwyn Townsend.
A lifetime area resident, Jim was an active member of Freshwater Community Church.

He was a graduate of Kenmore High School and Akron University. He played football in high school. Through a “walk-on” experience at Akron University he won a football scholarship.

James began his career as a Physical Education teacher at U. L. Light Jr. High in Barberton where he coached basketball and track. In a few years he moved to Barberton High School and taught History and Drivers Training. He was the J. V. coach and Assistant Varsity coach.

Later he transferred to Buchtel H. S. in the Akron District teaching History and Drivers Training. He was an assistant Varsity football coach and swimming coach. One year his swimming team placed 6th in the State Championship Meet.

In the latter years he earned an M.A. degree in Guidance & Counseling. He served as a counselor for the 10th throught 12th grades. In 1982 he retired due to a disability.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Eve; daughter Maureen (Rick) Brean of Norton; son Mark Townsend of Wadsworth; grandchildren Dianna Ellinger and Robert (Holly) Hepfl; great-grandchildren Casey Ellinger, Hailey and Jacob Hepfl; siblings Paul (Ruth) Townsend, Doris (Ron) Whitt and Jack (Kathy) Townsend and a host of other relatives and friends.

Pastor Steve Wiggins and Pastor Gerald Morris will conduct a memorial service Tuesday 11 AM at Freshwater Community Church, 185 Humboldt Avenue in Wadsworth, where the family will receive friends one hour prior to service time. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
