Dorothy L. VanDyke, 87, passed away October 15, 2014 at Summa Akron City Hospital.

“Dottie” was born in Larimer, Pa. to the late Harrison and Lillian Robena (Williams) Raling. She was also preceded in death by her son, Rodney C. Strickler

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Wadsworth. Dottie was employed by the Wadsworth City Schools as an Educational Aide for 30 years. She was affectionately known as ‘Sarge’ and was loved and respected by many of her students and staff during her storied career. Her interests were many, including baking (pies),bowling, needle point and playing cards. Her greatest joy was spending time with family and friends.

She is survived by her loving husband of 57 years, Robert C. VanDyke. He has been her caretaker for the last four years. She has a loving family who care very deeply for her. She is survived by sons George E. Strickler III (Alice) of Bath, David L. VanDyke of Kent, Washington and Clarke R. VanDyke (Shawn) of Wadsworth, daughters Carol L. Prager of Goleta, Ca. and Kathy Z. Wise (Cliff) of Wadsworth and daughter-in-law Cindy Sim Strickler of Santa Barbara, Ca. She is also survived by her brother Herb Raling, sister-in-laws Flora VanDyke and Ruth Ann Hartswick, brother-in-laws Dan VanDyke, Don and Jim Strickler and numerous nieces and nephews.

Dottie truly loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is survived by grandchildren George E. Strickler IV (Amanda) and great-grandchildren Penelope and George V of Copley, grandchildren Todd Strickler (Wendy) of Rockville, Md., Stephen Strickler (Jessie) of Chicago, IL., Lauren Strickler of Arlington, Va., Megan Strickler of Santa Barbara, Ca., Luke Appleton IV and great-grandchild June Appleton of Goleta, Ca., Christy Prager of Goleta, Ca., Colin VanDyke (Pam) of Wadsworth and Nathan, Meredith and Riley VanDyke of Wadsworth.

Services will be held at 11:30 A.M. on Monday, October 20, 2014 at the Wadsworth United Methodist Church located at 195 Broad Street, Wadsworth , Ohio. Family will receive friends and loved ones between 10:00 and 11:15 A.M. A private inurnment will be held at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Critical Care Center at Summa Akron City Hospital, Summa Hospice/ Palliative Care (Summa Foundation, 525 E. Market St. Akron, Ohio 44304) or a charity of your choice.
